About Mathew Moolman
Mathew Moolman, an exceptionally vibrant young man, was born on 16 November 1989 in Cape Town. Mathew, who is now well-known for his smooth and soulful voice took part in the M-net show Idols in 2009. Mathew’s Idols journey ended when he fell out in the top 12. Like the achiever that he is, this ex-Waterfront Theatre student did not let that get the better of him. Since then he has been on radio shows promoting himself, doing gigs and was a presenter on SABC 2’s Hectic Nine Nine Show for 18 months.
It all started at the tender age of nine when Mathew went for piano lessons as a third grader at Montevideo Primary School in Montana, Cape Town. Although it ended after 3 years he continued to find his passion for music. But it was in grade 8 when Mathew auditioned for his high school choir and didn’t make it. Again this did not dampen his spirits, because he eventually then made it in grade 10 after a friend had encouraged him to audition. At the age of 15, Mathew was informally trained, by his father and brother, to play guitar, the instrument he is well-known for. He continued to play guitar but also wanted more and then took on the harmonica and drums as well. In 2005 Mathew, a grade ten learner became the drummer for his school band at Worcester Gymnasium. After moving back to Cape Town in 2006 Mathew’s focus was not so much on music, but on basketball, where he was the senior team captain at Pinelands High before being selected for the Provincial team.
It was in 2007, his matric year, when Mathew decided to pursue his music career once again. Mathew became very popular at Pinelands High because of his performances in talent shows, musicals and the cabaret.
Mathew, who comes from a musical family, has a love for old, jazzy and soulful type of music. He has huge goals set for himself, where he plans on becoming a household name. He plans on becoming one of South Africa’s best performers. It is all being put into action at Rooftop Records, where he is currently recording his album, which is due to be released in October 2010.
Since Idols, Mathew has been busy in studio recording his album, on national television, on air and also doing gigs and at concerts sharing a stage with huge household names. Idols, indeed was a stepping stone for Mathew. He is driven for success and because of his vision, he will strive to reach every goal set for himself.
