FAIEK HENDRICKS on ME SPORT FROM 2-3PM ON WWW.thetaxi.co.za on thursday
Faiek writes as follows :
I do feel honored to be remembered as a “golden oldie” rugby player.
As you know, as one gets older, one drifts into oblivion as far as the broader public is concerned.
No longer on the back pages of the sports, but that does not mean that the passion for rugby evaporates.
In fact, in real life it just grows and grows. Then it becomes time to plough back into the community.
The youth is the main focus of my rugby interest.
I also coach the girls rugby team and the University of the Western Cape.
My team grew from 25 players this year to 70.
I have approximately 12 girls in the WP team , and 2 in the Springbok team that travelled to Canada this year.
Currently they will be participating in the WP Sevens and the Springbok Sevens later this year.
Rugby amongst the ladies is just as exciting as it is for men.
I am also the pro for WEPCRU (Western and Eastern Province’s Cultural and Rugby Unity)
This organization stands for youth development/community upliftment/sport-especially rugby/leadership development and coaching clinics.
We have made many inroads on the cultural side in the lives of the youth in respect of the brass band “Impronto” as well.
We will be taking 60 youths of the brass band down to PE to support the international sevens in Dec.
