French Ambassador to Mozambique, H.E Yann Pradeau, bestowed the prestigious Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters upon Moreira Chonguiça, the renowned Mozambican saxophonist, composer, and producer, at a gala event held at the French residence, in Maputo on February 13, 2024.
Chonguiça’s invaluable contributions to fostering cultural exchange between Mozambique and France, coupled with his exceptional musical achievements, earned him this esteemed recognition.
Ambassador Pradeau, in a press conference held on February 8, commended Chonguiça’s unwavering commitment to the arts and his pivotal role in strengthening cultural ties between the two nations.
Joining the ranks of esteemed Mozambican artists honored by France, including Malangatana Valente Ngwenha, Ricardo Rangel, Mia Couto, Elisa Domingas Jamisse (Mingas), and Quito Tembe, Chonguiça’s induction into the Order of Arts and Letters signifies France’s acknowledgment of his outstanding artistic prowess and his efforts in nurturing cultural understanding.
Established by the French Minister of Culture on May 2, 1957, the Order of Arts and Letters recognises individuals who demonstrate excellence in the cultural sphere, both within France and globally.
Through this honour, France celebrates Chonguiça’s exceptional talent and the profound impact of his artistic endeavors in Mozambique, Africa, and beyond.
