Celebrating Indigenous Heritage: “The People of the Sun” Film Highlights Ouma Katrina’s Legacy and the San Community

London, UK – 12th Aug 2024 – The Blue t production company, in collaboration with Patriot Films SA, is proud to announce the premiere of their short film, “The People of the Sun,” which tells the inspiring and comprehensive story of Ouma Katrina Esau and the San people. Ouma Katrina, the last fluent speaker of the N|uu language, has dedicated her life to preserving the heritage of the San community in Upington, South Africa.

Ouma Katrina Esau was honoured with an honorary doctorate from the University of Cape Town for her relentless efforts to revive and teach the N|uu language. Her school, TheǂAqe ǁX’oqe School (meaning “Gaze at the Stars”), serves as a beacon of hope for the preservation of this ancient language and culture. Despite numerous challenges, including the vandalism of her school during the COVID-19 lockdown, Ouma Katrina continues her mission with unwavering determination.

“The People of the Sun” has been nominated for BAFTA-qualifying British Urban Film Festival in the UK, making its UK premiere in mid-October, and the Academy Award-qualifying Edmonton Film Festival in Canada, making its North American premiere at the end of September. The film aims to raise awareness for Ouma, the nearly extinct N|uu language, and the San community.

This film is not only a tribute to Ouma Katrina’s remarkable journey but also a call to action. The producers are using this opportunity to fundraise for Ouma Katrina’s school and the KhomaniSan Women’s Empowerment Organisation, established in 2021 by 15 women with the goal of empowering women and youth to sustain themselves and have a voice in society. Donations can be made through the website: The People Of The Sun.

In addition to featuring Ouma Katrina, the film highlights the work of acclaimed poet Siphokazi Jonas, a University of Cape Town alumna. Jonas, who has recently released her powerful book of poetry, “Weeping Becomes a River” with Penguin Books, brings an evocative voice to the film, enriching its narrative with her profound words. She is also known for her film “We Are Dying Here,” which addresses themes of violence and resilience.

The Blue t and Patriot Films SA hope that this film will raise awareness for Ouma, the nearly extinct N|uu language, and the San community. Through storytelling and cultural preservation, they aim to make a meaningful impact and ensure that these vital traditions are not lost to history.
