Moderated panel at FAME Week Africa

On Tuesday, 2 September, I had the privilege of moderating a panel (for the second year running)  at FAME Week Africa at the CTICC in Cape Town,

Hosted by the excellent Chad Saaiman.

It was an engaging discussion with outstanding panelists and valuable insights shared.

What struck me, however, was a worrying gap: many creatives aspire to the outcomes of success, but are less focused on building the foundational knowledge of the business they are in.

Sustainable careers are not built on aspiration alone—they require education, discipline, and a deep understanding of the industry.

For the past two years, I’ve hosted The Business of Entertainment series on CapeTalk (Thursday night at 9pm)—covering exactly these fundamentals.

Every episode is available on Spotify, yet not one delegate approached me to access this resource.

That silence highlights the urgency of encouraging professionals in the creative industries to engage more seriously with the business side of their craft.

My call to action:
If you are committed to a long-term career in entertainment, invest in your knowledge.
Seek out resources, ask questions, and do the work.
Ignorance may feel easy in the short term, but knowledge is what sustains careers in the long run.
