Help me understand 2 jazz festivals on overlapping dates in March

These are my personal thoughts on the 2 jazz events to be held soon in the Western Cape.

This is frankly absurd. How does a small city like Cape Town end up hosting two major jazz festivals on the exact same weekend?

When did Cape Town suddenly become London able to sustain multiple large-scale, sold-out cultural events simultaneously?

We simply do not have the audience size, infrastructure, or industry depth to support this kind of overlap without serious consequences.

This decision reflects poorly on both promoters. Instead of growing the jazz ecosystem, they’ve chosen to cannibalise it splitting an already limited audience, diluting attendance, and undermining the success of both events.

No one wins here: not the artists, not the audiences, and certainly not the city.

And let’s not ignore the ripple effects. Technical crews, production suppliers, and support staff will be stretched beyond reason, compromising quality across the board.

That’s not ambitious planning—that’s reckless coordination.

This is a sad, unnecessary mess. It shows a lack of strategic thinking and collaboration in an industry that desperately needs both.

I would genuinely like to hear the explanation and the sound reasoning behind a decision this ill-considered.

Because from where it stands now, it looks less like vision and more like chaos. Looking forward to readers comments and thoughts.
