About Anderson Carvalho Dance & Choreography (ACDC) and the origins of Dance Intersect

Anderson Carvalho Dance & Choreography ACDC is a dance company and is based in the Netherlands. ACDC is headed up by internationally recognised Dutch/Brazilian choreographer Anderson Carvalho and was established in 2018. The company works on a project-to-project basis – in the Netherlands and internationally. Core to Anderson’s artistic practice is collaboration, connection, creation and transformation. He devises and creates work with dancers and creatives in residencies. The creative process is fluid and provides space for personal narratives and stories of the dancers to become intertwined with the conceptual framework which operates as a curatorial prompt, rather than as a fixed construct.

Anderson who was born in Brazil, has studied extensively, including UCT and a Masters in choreography at Codarts Rotterdam, Netherlands. While studying in Cape Town at UCT, he fell in love with Cape Town. Passionate about facilitating collaborative dance theatre on the African continent, he lives and works in Cape Town, for a few months each year. In the South African winter of 2022, ACDC launched a dance theatre platform at the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone. ACDC worked with South African dancers, devising a new work, When I Left The Room, which premiered at The Joseph Stone. The programme included a guest company from South Africa.

Last winter [2023], ACDC developed its vision further, widening the scope of its work in South Africa and Dance Intersect was launched at The Joseph Stone. ACDC premiered its new work, Intimacy of The Skin, devised by Anderson and a company of South African dancers, who worked in a four-month residency. After the Cape Town season, the company toured to Rwanda. An extract from Intimacy of The Skin, was presented at the Ubumuntu Arts Festival –a multi-national arts festival – which is held in the outdoor Amphitheatre at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Dance Intersect 2024 – bumper programme

Building on the success to Dance Intersect 2023, from audiences, critics and creatives in the industry, ACDC have expanded Dance Intersect 2024 – for its inaugural season at the Baxter. An open call for auditions went out on dance sites in Africa and internationally to devise a new dance theatre piece with ACDC. Six dancers were selected. Sofie van Doorn, Dutch based in Haarlem,  Weronika Kamińska, Polish based in London, Gemma Trehearn, SA based in Cape Town, Nicolas Laubscher, SA based in Cape Town, Caitlyn Casson, US based in New York and Rhapsody Stiggers, US Based in Boston. Farnel Smart, from South Africa is working as assistant choreographer. During a five-month residency at Ballet on Kloof, the team will co-create Silent Symphony of Feelings. This piece of dance theatre will be accompanied on stage, by American musician/composer Adam Claussen. He will play saxophone. Adam, who is based in Germany has written music for film and dance and scored the music for ACDC’s previous works in South Africa.

Ballet de Barcelona from Spain

ACDC’s dream and vision was to expand Dance Intersect 2024 into a programme which includes international companies and artists and is proudly bringing out Ballet de Barcelona from Spain as Guest Company. ACDC is grateful to the Spanish Embassy for its support which has made this possible.

SboNdaba Dance – Local Guest Choreographer – South Africa

As with previous years, ACDC has invited a dance company from South Africa to Dance Intersect and is proud to collaborate with SboNdaba Dance again (South Africa) – which will present a newly commissioned work at Dance Intersect 2024.

Lee van der Merwe – Local Guest Choreographer – South Africa

An exciting innovation for Dance Intersect 2024 is that Lee van der Merwe is the local Guest Chorographer. The 29-year-old South African artist has been commissioned to create a new piece for Dance Intersect. Lee has worked widely, across theatre and dance and is elated to have the opportunity to devise dance theatre, with a company of dancers who have responded to an open call for auditions. This is a separate company to the dancers in ACDC’s Silent Symphony of Feelings.
