Open Streets Cape Town creates the Social Innovation Festival
Washington Drive, LangaSunday 8 November 2015
12pm – 5pm
Open Streets Cape Town has partnered with Red Bull Amaphiko to bring the first ever Social Innovation Festival to Langa on the 8th of November 2015. Using ‘Open Streets’ as a platform, the festival will showcase the creations of talented South African visionaries mentored through the Red Bull Amaphiko Academy. These inspiring social entrepreneurs have produced inventive solutions to solve social problems within their local communities.
Part of Langa’s Washington Street will be closed off to motorised transport, allowing the public to explore a series of exhibits and demonstrations, which exemplify innovative ideas, creative activities and community spirit. These include Thato Kgatlhanye’s upcycled solar backpacks and Yonela Khetsheza’s Feminque Fitness Club. There will also be ‘traditional’ Open Streets activities, such as street cricket, children’s games and even Phillip Miller performing on a ‘street piano’.
“We worked with community members to roll out the first Open Streets day in Langa earlier this year and it was a real success,” says Co-founder and Director for Open Streets Cape Town Marcela Guerrero Casas. “The Social Innovation Festival gives us the chance to build on that success whilst being a platform for projects that highlight the potential the field offers to communities such as Langa.”
The day also aims to inspire individuals with the same passion to look at their surrounding communities and identify a gap that can be bridged. The Social Innovation Festival is a great way to experience the city with family and friends by participating in various activities but to also get informed on social entrepreneurship as a sustainable platform for social impact.
The Festival is a collaboration between the Langa community, Open Streets Cape Town, and Red Bull Amaphiko with the kind support of the SAB Foundation.

About Open Streets
“Open Streets” is a worldwide movement of citizens who are reclaiming their streets as public space. During an ‘Open Streets Day’, a street or section of a street is closed off to motorised transport to create a temporary network of non-motorised areas and routes throughout the city. Rather than being an event, Open Streets is simply a day to reimagine public life and use our streets differently. Open Streets Cape Town is a non-profit organisation working to create shared spaces that embody respect for everyone and help bridge the spatial and social divides of our city.www.openstreets.org.za | @OpenStreetsCT
