Capetonians will have the privilege of seeing South African-born music superstar Jonathan Butler in action this Saturday at the Nederburg Wine Farm in Paarl.

Butler, who was born in Athlone on the Cape Flats during the Apartheid years, will be backed up by local band Top Dog. Other performers on the bill include local gospel and jazz sensation Jonathan Rubain, saxophonist Dale Patience, vocal powerhouse Elwira Standili, Paarl rapper Mr Ferl and another Paarl boy, the talented keyboard player Marco Mentoor with MM Productions.

John Maralack from the Connect Church (previously the Valley Christian Fellowship), who are presenting the show as a fundraiser, said they were lucky to get Butler to perform for them. “We have done some shows on a smaller scale before, but nothing nearly as big as this one. We actually got him through a common friend.

“He was in the country and he was available, so we thought it would be a good thing to get him to perform. I think the last time Jonathan performed in Paarl was in the early 80’s, so it’s a good thing for Paarl – and the Western Cape – to come out and see a world superstar in action. We will also have the mayor of the Drakenstein Municipality, Conrad Poole, there to welcome Jonathan.”

Saturday’s concert starts at 17:00 with gates opening at 16:00. VIP tickets cost R500, which include VIP seating, snacks, a meet and greet, and VIP parking. Other tickets cost R200 but people who buy more than ten tickets will get them at R150. Tickets are available online at Webtickets and at Pick n Pay. Tickets bought at the gate on Saturday will cost R250. Kids under 12 get free entry.

It is a picnic concert, so people are welcome to bring chairs and blankets, but no tables are allowed. No alcohol will be allowed, as it will be on sale.

A guitar signed by Butler and an oil painting of Butler performing, created by Iymanyi Belachew during the show, will be on auction.
