Multi-award-winning MOREIRA CHONGUIÇA is a celebrated jazz musician born and currently based in Mozambique. He is a saxophonist, ethnomusicologist, producer, composer, and marketing conceptualist.
Moreira attended the University of Cape Town to further his music studies, graduating from the South African College of Music with a degree in jazz performance. He also holds an honors degree in Ethnomusicology (cum laude).
Earlier this year Moreira was presented with the Medal of Merit: Arts and Letters from the Governor of City of Maputo on behalf of the Mozambican Government for his contribution to this field in Mozambique.
Moreira was also invited by UNESCO to attend the International Jazz Day celebrations in Addis Ababa including performing with Dr Mulatu Astatke and the opening of the conference on World Press Freedom Day at the African Union Headquarters.
Now on Saturday 25th May at the Radisson Red Hotel situated at the V &A Waterfront Moreira will present a master class in Conjunction with Music Exchange and the Western Cape Government Arts and Culture Department on the “How to understand your leverage and Branding as an artist –Starts at 10.30 am till 12 noon –tickets from Quicket or the door
Then latter that evening at 8.30pm at the Norval Foundation situated at 4 Steenberg Road Tokai Moreira will have his show.
Moreira hasseven award-winning, globally informed and celebrated albums – he is blazing a trail from his east-African roots to the world.
Exposed to and inspired by the likes of Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, Percy Sledge and Manu Dibango, Moreira’s energetic contemporary rhythmic compositions have garnered applause across all six continents.
His unique sound, technical agility and ingenuity on the alto and soprano saxophone, coupled with passionate stage performance captivate audiences universally.
Moreira’s band comprises some of South and Southern Africa’s hottest young jazz musicians. He handpicks his band dependent on the event and occasion.
Tickets cost R220 or R150 depending on the type of chair you’d like to reserve. The show starts at 8:30PM, with a dinner before the show at 6:00PM.
