DJ SELWYN 4.0 the experience (since 1981)

2021 is a commemorative year for well-known DJ & Radio Personality Selwyn Bartlett & will be celebrated with a host of online events

Selwyn’s love for music comes a long way from playing records at informal family functions at the tender age of 5 to having his own mobile disco at 13 years old to working in a record bar in the early eighties.

His dream to become a DJ started with Crest Mobile Disco, a name derived from his high school Crestway Secondary School where he was pivotal in fund raising.

The disco era of the early 80’s found Selwyn behind the turntables at Negresco in Retreat before heading for a residency at his first major club Talk of the Town in Athlone Industria. In August of 1983 he took up residency at the very first high tech Discotheque in Paarl, Tiffany’s, where he wowed the crowds with his mixing prowess and microphone chirps. In 1987 he found himself at Club Thriller in Belleville South where he spent 3 years before taking up residency at Club Niveau in Wellington. Over the years he made guest appearances in Durban, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Namibia.

His experience in music retail is unquestionable as he worked his way to the top from sales assistant to senior management during the 80’s and early 90’s employed by successful companies like Musica, Disque Record Library, Top CD and Kurse Music.

His next love is radio and after many years of perseverance to get a foot through the door, he finally got a graveyard slot with P4 Radio Cape Town in 1997 and within 3 years was hosting the weekday morning show. This led to an interest in Radio Station Management and Selwyn moved swiftly from Production Co-Ordinator to Music Manager, promoted to Programming Manager in 2004 and in 2007 to oversee the Operations management portfolio at Heart 104.9FM.

As an A&R Manager and as a marketing project for P4 Radio/Heart FM, Selwyn compiled various music compilations CD’s between 2004 and 2007 which collectively sold in excess of Gold Status.

1. Heart & Soul Volume 1 – 4

2. Old Skool Volume 1

He served on the Board of Directors for the Cape Music Industry Commission [CAPEMIC] for a 5 year term and now focuses mainly on his own Community Radio Broadcasting Solutions Company.

In 2019, Selwyn graduated with a distinction, Dip.ACET: Adult Community Education Training at the University of Cape Town which has assisted him in doing training and development in the Community Radio sector. He is also an accredited assessor for various SETA learning programmes. Selwyn was also a keynote speaker at Music Exchange 2019.

He regularly lives up to his name by dishing up the spiciest beats at major music festivals like Jazz on the Rocks, Love Jazz Cruise, MossJazzFest, Jazz on the Riverbanks and Oh Dam and you are bound to find him supplying music at Corporate functions and private parties.
