Newcomer Nicholas Joubert pours his heart out in debut single Someone New

The catharsis of songwriting: newcomer Nicholas Joubert pours his heart out in debut single Someone New

Nicholas Joubert’s debut single ‘Someone New’ may concern a break-up, but the song is anything but gloomy. Wanting to write an upbeat pop song while maintaining a honest approach, based on real life experiences, the songster poured his heart out into ‘Someone New’.

He says, “I wrote this song after going through a breakup and navigating through all the emotions that go with it.”

Serving as a personal catharsis, Nicholas underwent a ton of self-reflection, learning a lot about himself and the world around him.

“Managing my emotions at the time of the break-up seemed almost impossible,” he explains. “I wrote down what I was going through and it was like my own personal therapy.”

Making himself completely vulnerable was a terrifying thought, but it was needed in order to make the song relatable.

I had a quick chat with Nicholas last week :

The new decade means ?

The new decade is about embracing your authenticity and being considerate about one another’s different realities, even if it differs from your own. 😊

Fame is about ?

Inspiring. I’d like to use my platform to inspire the world to live better and become better versions of themselves. I want to have fun making music and living my true authentic self.

Retirement will happen when ?

I do not know. I do not feel that I want to retire, because I am living my dream and I truly enjoy what I am doing. It doesn’t mean that everything are all sunshine and roses, but that is part of the journey I am taking. If I were to retire from music some day, I’ll probably devote my time to something bigger than myself like cleaning beaches or helping environmental change.

I don’t do ?

Entitled people. Everyone has their story and we need to try and respect it as best we can. You’re not better than someone else just because of this car or staying in that area.

What does music mean to you?

It has different meanings to me, it all depends on my mood at that point in time. It tells a story and if I am not telling it, then I am listening to someone else’s story. Music is a way of expression. Some people express themselves through visuals, I express myself through sound. I’ve always said, have a look at the music I am listening to and what the words are saying and you’ll get a pretty good idea of who I am. Music is who I am. If I’m not listening to music, I am probably thinking about it or creating it.

My music is about ?

My personal experiences, it is my story. It is about me navigating life. Until music, I always thought I am the only one feeling this way or experiencing life in that manner, but I’ve seen that other people are relating to my music and my story.

I Would love to co write with

This is difficult because there are so many artists I’d love to collaborate with. My top three would probably be Max Martin, Kygo and Taylor Swift.

Where do you go for inspiration to create ?

I look at my own life and my own experiences. My emotions are very complex and most of the time I struggle to navigate or understand all of it. So then I write about it. I used to only look outward for inspiration, but now I just look inward and then the story starts to tell itself.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work ?

Seeing a project come to life as it is progressing through its stages, from ideation to the final release. I also enjoy performing but I feel that is the one area where I need to improve a lot still.

The song you must do in every show ?

Someone New. Its my debut – my first. 😊

Any funny moments on stage?

I always have this moment where I interact with the crowd and I get very “romantic” and “out there”. Seeing the ladies’ expessions are always entertaining, especially if they blush or get a shy smile – it is really sweet. And it is odd that I do this because generally I am very shy and would not even dare doing it when I am not on stage.

My heroes?

My mom and my brothers.

My Style Icon

Shawn Mendes and Zac Efron

Which living person do you admire most and why?

My mom. We had a really difficult childhood and at one point we really struggled to make ends meet. Somehow she came through and did the best she could. She had a lot of resilience despire the cards we were dealt and I have a lot of respect for it…even though we sometimes bump heads.

What is your most treasured possession?

Any gift I have received from a special friend or family member. Usually my fragrances and watches, but I get very sentimental over special gifts.

It’s your round what are you drinking?

Ha, I am not a big fan of drinking alcohol but I am a sucker for good coffee or hot chocolate. If it has to be alcohol, either wine or something with vodka in. Definitely NOT tequila. I do not handle tequila well AT ALL.

Dream gig to do?

Headlining in Madison Square Garden, New York.

What makes you stand out?

I can make myself very vulnerable, especially when I am writing. I am brave and unapologetically myself.

Nicknames?

Nikki, Klas

If you were not a musician what would you do?

I’d be in business, a medical doctor or a vet.

Who would play you in a Hollywood Blockbuster and why ?

Probably a villain in some James Bond movie. Apparently I can look quite mean and intimidating at times.

Who do you love?

Taylor Swift. Hands down

What is your favorite word?

Uhm, the PG version would be “oh my hat”.

Favorite Fashion Garment

Jeans

Give us some real proper slang and what it means

I’m not good with slang, but I speak sarcasm fluently. Slang words I’ll probably use is dope (means really cool) or Lit (amazing). I also use “OMG you can’t be serious” quite often (usually in traffic).

Top of your bucket list?

Travelling the world and scuba diving the great barrier reef.

Your greatest achievement?

I’ve had two dreams since I can remember, getting a degree and being a singer. I got my first degree in 2020 and my music career started taking off in 2021. These are my two biggest achievements in my life that I’ve been so proud of. Now its going forward and building on what I’ve achieved thus far.

What do you complain about most often?

Traffic and other people’s driving abilities, or the lack thereof rather. I get very passionate and verbal in traffic.

What is your fear?

That I did not do something meaningful with my life. Or that I regret not chasing my dreams.

Happiness is?

Found within…

On stage I tend to?

Flirt with the crowd. Don’t know why I suddenly get the guts to do it on stage and not in everyday life. Maybe I could’ve been married by now if I wasn’t this shy off stage.

The best life lesson you have been taught?

You can only receive with an open hand. Trust the process and know that the best is yet to come.

Do you get worked up whilst watching a sports game on TV ?

No, I rarely watch sport on TV. I’d rather go to a stadium and watch it in person (mostly because I love the vibe).

…But have me watch “Me Before You” or “Lion King” and I’ll cry like a baby.

Where would you like to be right now?

Touring the world and making people happy with my music.

Do you do charity work and if you do –what do you do ?

I’ve done charity work for disabled people and children living with cancer. I think I want to focus on doing some environmental work, beach clean ups and work for the SPCA. No animal should be treated poorly – all they want are love and treats. 😊

Wishes and dreams ?

My dream is to travel the world, entertain people globally and express myself through music. Music is a great way of expression, it is fun…I want people to vibe to my music. I want people to be happy – life is too short.
