Elisabeth-Sue: Writing Songs That Speak to the Heart

From Bellville in Cape Town’s northern suburbs comes a songwriter who believes music’s greatest power lies not in fame, but in connection.

Independent singer-songwriter Elisabeth-Sue is carving her own path in the South African music landscape, writing, recording, producing and releasing original music on her own terms. With a commitment to releasing a new song every month across major streaming platforms, she represents a new generation of independent artists who are taking ownership of their creative journeys.

Her latest release, “Godfried” published through Sony Music Publishing, showcases a songwriter whose greatest strength lies in storytelling. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences, conversations, and the lives of people she encounters, Elisabeth-Sue crafts songs that are honest, relatable and deeply human.

“For me, music is not only my life but also my therapy,” she says. “It’s the language the entire world understands.”

That philosophy sits at the heart of everything she creates. Whether a song brings a smile during a stressful commute, offers comfort during difficult times, or inspires someone to sing a little louder in the shower, Elisabeth-Sue believes she has achieved her purpose.

Unlike many artists who chase trends, Elisabeth-Sue remains fiercely committed to her own creative instincts. Blessed with the rare ability to hear melodies and lyrics simultaneously, she develops songs organically, often capturing ideas in the middle of the night before returning to shape them into finished works.

“I need to stay true to who I am as a musician,” she explains. “I know not everyone will like what I create, but authenticity is important.”

Her influences are as diverse as they are iconic. From the storytelling brilliance of Linda Perry, whom she dreams of co-writing with one day, to the artistry of Brandi CarlileShania TwainElton JohnSixto RodriguezTash SultanaMiley Cyrus and Coldplay, Elisabeth-Sue draws inspiration from artists who have built lasting careers through authenticity and exceptional songwriting.

Away from the studio, she finds joy in the company of her beloved Boston Terrier, Ibi, her rescue kitten Japie, and the people closest to her. A passionate supporter of animal welfare organisations, she believes in giving back wherever possible.

Her dream stages include Cape Town’s iconic Kirstenbosch Gardens and The Caverns in Tennessee, while one item sits firmly at the top of her bucket list: busking on the streets of New York City.

Reflecting on her journey so far, Elisabeth-Sue counts winning a Battle of the Bands competition in 2013 with her group Awehwolfies, and the opportunity to collaborate with talented musicians, among her proudest achievements. Yet perhaps her greatest accomplishment is the one she continues to pursue daily: writing, recording and producing music that remains true to her vision.

Asked what makes her different, she answers with characteristic humility:

“I believe every songwriter has their own uniqueness. I’m grateful for the gift of creating both melodies and lyrics at the same time, but I also believe there is space for everyone.”

With a growing catalogue of original music, an unwavering work ethic, and a clear artistic identity, Elisabeth-Sue is proving that success in music isn’t about chasing fame. It’s about creating songs that leave a lasting impression.

And if her music can inspire, motivate or bring hope to someone along the way, then she’s already achieved exactly what she set out to do.
